Spotlight on…. Karen McCluskey/Kathryn Joosten

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Good morning everyone!! kathryn.jpgBefore I get back to recaps of the series, I’d like to take a minute to put the spotlight on one of my favorite neighbors, Karen Cluskey and the woman who plays her. She’s been there pretty much from the beginning and has slowly taken on a more prominent role. Once no more than a cranky neighbor that Lynette hated, she’s now her babysitter and a good friend to her and the Scavo family.

One of the best things to me about the character is the fact she’s a straight-shooter. She says exactly what’s on her mind and isn’t afraid of anyone. From defending the Scavo kids from a “kidnapper” to helping Lynette scatter Ida Greenberg’s ashes, she has some of the cooler scenes of the neighbors. While she is a bit of a “hard” type, she has shown quite a few times over the years that she’s also got a vulnerable and human side. One of those moments was when she begged Lynette to come with her because she was scared to go to the hospital alone. Another was when she revealed to the Scavo kids her son had died at a very young age. You could see the sadness and a longing for the past in her eyes during that one, even though she tried not to show anything.

One of her odder moments came in Season 3. It was during the episodes “Liaisons” and “God, that’s Good”. In these episodes, Ida Greenberg and Parker Scavo find the dead body of her husband in the freezer. Turns out, she came home one day several years ago to find he had passed suddenly. Scared of losing her home and everything she’s got after finding out his first wife would get his pension, she hides his body so the company thinks he’s alive and she can keep collecting the checks. Talk about desperation!

As for the woman who plays her, Kathryn Joosten herself seems like quite the lady. Once a psychiatric nurse, she later married and had two children. Sadly, they ended up divorcing due to her husband’s drinking problem and Kathryn had to figure out what to do with herself. She took a chance of rekindling her childhood love of acting during her 40s and the rest is history. She has guested on many series, including Buffy, the X-Files and Joan of Arcadia. She is also a lung cancer survivor and has won an Emmy for her part on Housewives. Given all this, I think it’s safe to say she’s just as spunky and determined as the character she plays. Now that they’re shooting again, it shouldn’t be long before all you spoiler readers out there find out what happened to her character. Me? I think I’ll just wait and be surprised.

Well, I’m out of here for now… stay tuned for those recaps I’ll be starting up again tomorrow. I leave you guys with some great McCluskey quotes. Enjoy!!

Lynette: “Are you sure you didn’t misplace it? No offense, but you’re getting up there in the years.”
Mrs. McCluskey: “No offense, but you should be sterilised.”

Lynette: “Let me tell you something. Half of life is obligations. You don’t want to go to your husband’s company Christmas party, but you do. You don’t want to sell candy so your kid’s band can buy piccolos, but you do it. You attend your third cousin’s wedding. You pick up the dry cleaning. That’s life. It’s obligations. And you are now my obligation, so tomorrow morning, I’ll pick you up, and we’ll go to the pharmacy.”
Mrs. McClusky: “Gee, I’m touched by your outpouring of compassion.”

“Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds,
that blow.
I am the diamond glimpse of snow.
I am the sunlight on amber waves of grain
I am the gentle autumns rain.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I did not die. “

Classic Desperation

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Good morning, everyone! Hope you’re all having a great day and ready to talk Housewives. I know I am! Now, you know from these posts that I’m a fan of Karl/Richard Burgi. I admit, the guy can be a jerk at times and kinda sleazy at others. Still, he’s entertaining and he does have his moments. I think for me, his most notable one is in season 2, episode 11 when he stands up for a friend. The episode is called “One More Kiss” and has Andrew Van de Kamp at his mean kid best. Check out this youtube video below to see what I mean.

For those who may not be able to see it properly, let me set the scene for you. As you probably remember, Andrew had it in for Bree that year and was doing everything he possibly could to drive her nuts. Because he knows that Bree has a problem with him being gay, he purposefully sets it up for Bree to find her and Justin in bed together, leading to a huge fight. Andrew, determined to get the upper hand, threatens to tell how Bree just sat by and did nothing while George the crazy pharmacist died. Bree is at the end of her rope, but lucky for her she’s got someone on her side… Karl!

She has him come over and explain to Andrew how what Bree did was not actually illegal and he has no basis for threatening her. Andrew takes this in his usual bratty fashion and Karl asks her to give them a minute alone. No sooner does she step out of the room than Karl grabs Andrews and pushes him up against a wall. He tells Andrew that Rex was a good friend and he will not sit by and watch Andrew behave like this. He adds that it would hurt Rex to know what Andrew has become. To top it all off, he threatens to really hurt Andrew if he ever pulls something like this again. Go Karl! Andrew really needed something like that at the time, as he was getting totally out of control. I just wanna know where Karl was when Andrew took Bree to court, went after Bree’s recovering sex addict boyfriend and tried to get Danielle to do the same? I guess he was too busy with Edie and sparring with Susan. Ah, well…

Well, I gotta go now. Stay tuned, though, cause I’ll be bringing you more classic moments from the show as well as recaps and any news as it becomes available. Til next time, take care!

One Charitable Cast

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Hey, Housewives fans! I hope you guys had a great weekend and are as ready as I am to get back to talking our favorite show. First, I just want to say thanks to everyone who’s posted a comment lately and I look forward to getting to chat some more. Now… let’s dish, huh?

It’s been pretty quiet on the Housewives front the past few days. Hopefully that will start changing soon as the cast is scheduled to start filming today. Still, there are a couple of things going on. First off, continuing the Housewives tradition of getting involved in good causes, Teri Hatcher recently made a trip to Tanzania with her daughter to benefit Americashare. During their two week stay, the pair kicked off a penpal exchange with Emerson’s school as well as dropping off over 30 grand in supplies and donations. Talk about a productive trip! Americashare helps people in the area who are suffering from poverty as well as HIV/AIDS.

Teri isn’t the only do-gooder on the cast, though. Eva and Felicity, along with many other celebs, have come together in support of the “Burma- It Can’t Wait” campaign. The organization is working to secure the human rights of the people of Burma as well as its jailed would-be leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. Check out a video that features many celebs, including Felicity. You can see more with her and Eva on the organization’s website.

On a lighter note, don’t forget to catch Ricardo on George Lopez if you haven’t seen it already. It will air on Nick at 10 PM on July 9th. I know I’ll be there! Well, I guess that’s about all for today. I wanna leave you with yet another video for anyone who may not have gotten to see this the first time around. It’s Teri Hatcher and Banned from TV performing “Before He Cheats” on Idol Gives Back. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by her performance. What do you all think? Til next time… take care!

Casting Notes

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Good morning, everyone! Happy 4th of July… hope your day is going to be a great one! Me? I’m going for a more low-key kind of day at home. I thought before I go veg out for the day, I’d share some more casting news that was announced during my absence.

It’s been very busy on th ecasting front lately. While many current and former stars are getting shows and guest appearances, new cast members are being added to the Lane. Kristin from E! announced that the kid re-casting is basically done. Rumors suggest the twins are being played by 20-year-olds. I can see it… makes it much easier to get the job done if you don’t have to worry about taking time out to send a couple of teenagers to class. I just hope whoever they cast actually looks like they could be teenagers. Gabrielle Carteris on 90210, anyone? ::shudders::

neal-mcdonough.jpgFor all you Mike and Edie fans, there is some good news for you: both are returning. I know Nicolette was pretty much a lock, but James Denton himself was unsure if he was coming back or not. He’s going to be pretty active sharing custody of Maynard with Susan, while Edie will get a new love interest. That part will be played by Neal McDonough, who I remember from the series Boomtown. He has also had parts on Traveler, the Tin Man miniseries and I Know Who Killed Me. Let’s not judge him too harshly for the last one, huh? A guy’s gotta eat….

gale-harold.jpgFinally, we have Gale Harold. He will be playing Ken, the new man in Susan’s life. If he looks familiar to you, you’ve probably seen the short-lived FOX series Vanished. As you can see, there’s going to be a lot of new faces on the Lane this year. I’m excited to see how it all turns out. What do you think? Post your thoughts in the comments and make your voice heard! Til next time…. take care!

Catching Up…

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Hello, out there! There is so much to catch up on in my absence, I barely know where to start! I guess let’s get the latest out of the way, shall we? First all, there’s Felicity Huffman. She’s going to be one of the lucky few to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009. Each year, 25 people in all are scheduled to get one, including John Stamos (Full House/ER), William Petersen(CSI) and Harry Shearer (The Simpsons). Go her… this seems to be a big year for her getting honors. Not only did she get that award at the Maui Film Festival, she’s also been put on the Emmy short list.

Speaking of the Emmys… Desperate Housewives was not put on the short list for best series, so there will be no nod for the show this award season. However, Felicity, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria were. Very notably missing is Teri Hatcher. The ladies will be going against Tina Fey, America Ferrera, Christina Applegate, Mary-Louise Parker, Sarah Silverman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Anna Friel for a nomination and possible Emmy win. Good luck to the Wysteria gang… they had a great year.

eva-and-tony-at-hancock-premiere.jpgFinally, my childhood is getting defiled more each day. Remember Mario Lopez from Saved by the Bell? Well, he wants you to! The former Saturday morning star who is now more famous for his womanizing and not-so-nice ways has struck again! This time, he’s talking to the press about how he is upset he and Eva Longoria never got together. He said they have known each other for years, but never hooked up because they were never both single at the same time. Like that’s stopped him before… He goes on to say that he’s jealous of Tony Parker and he’s a “lucky guy”. Ain’t he a peach? I wonder how Mr. Parker feels about this sudden development.

Well, I’m out of here. I’ll be back with some casting tidbits later. For now… take care!

Alfre Woodard Has a New Series!

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

alfre-at-the-fashion-votes-event-june-16th.jpgFirst off, sorry for the absense. Some technical difficulties beyond anyone’s control. But, I’m here now and ready to share all the latest about Wysteria Lane!

While she’s been active in film and TV for years now, I first saw Alfre Woodard when she appeared on Desperate Housewives as Betty Applewhite, a mother who gives new meaning to the phrase tough love. Many fans were unimpressed by the plot, but I enjoyed it and her performance. She has this presence on screen that is hard to ignore. Still, the mystery was over by the end of season 2 and Alfre was off television. Until now.

She’s going to be co-starring in a new NBC series this fall called My Own Worst Enemy. Christian Slater is the lead in what is described as a new take on the Jekyll and Hyde story. Hmm…. that sounds kind of familiar, no? Anyway… Alfre will be playing his boss who also has a secret life. Guess all that time on Wysteria Lane is about to pay off

The series is reported to be scheduled for Mondays at 10 PM, so there will be no scheduling conflict for Housewives fans wanting to check out a former cast member. In other casting news, she’s also expected to be in the upcoming film The Family that Preys. In that one, Alfre is rumored to be playing the working-class friend of a socialite. Their long friendship is going to be tested, however, by their children’s problems. Sounds like quite the part I’ll update you on the film as more information comes out.

Well, that’s about all for today. Don’t worry, though, I’m just getting started Look for plenty more recaps, news and other stuff to come this week.
