A Sign of the Times?
Good morning again! I hope everyone had a great and safe holiday yesterday. If you wanna share what you did for Thanksgiving, please do! I’d love to hear about it. Now… let’s talk some TV huh?
I was browsing yahoo news today when I saw an interesting story. It was talking about how, given the current economic situation, flashy shows like Housewives and Dirty Sexy Money might be on their way out. There are quite a few industry people out there who think that viewers might be ready to see shows that portray things closer to their reality like Roseanne did back in the 80s and All in the Family in the 70s. For those who might not know much about those shows, Roseanne followed the lives of the Conner family, a working class people from Illinois who were always trying to figure out how to get by on very little. All in the Family portrayed working class people as well, but with a patriarch who had some problems with being PC and dealt with a lot of social issues of the time.
Another types of shows we might see even more of? Crime dramaslike CSI. Experts are saying these might become even more popular in these troubled times because people like seeing problems solved neatly in a little bit of time. Another possible effect of the economic downturn: the end of the dominance of reality shows. The reasoning there is people will be tired of watching others compete for flashy prizes or showing off crazy lifestyles, opting for more scripted programming to provide some much needed escapism. Lower ratings are being cited as evidence of this. We might also see fewer shows coming out since the ad business is hurting a bit as well.
So what do you all think? Are you finding yourself longing for more escape TV? Are you bored with reality shows and flashy characters? Comment and let me know what you think. Take care and I’ll see you next time. Also, don’t forget a new episode of Housewives airs Sunday.
