Shopping for a “Desperate Housewife”

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Hey, everyone! If you’re reading this, you’re most likely already a fan of the show. If that’s the case…. pay attention, cause you’re gonna find some stuff to add to your wish list! For all the people who may be browsing here out of curiosity, I’m gonna tell you about some great stuff that any fan would love for a gift on those special occasions.

season4dvdcover.jpg First off…. obviously, we have the DVDs. Season 4 comes out on September 2nd and no fan is going to want to miss it- especially if that fan loved this season. Not only does it have every episode, there are plenty of cool features. They’ll go behind the scenes of the making of “Something’s Coming” from beginning to end, Chat with all the couples on the show, offer insight into the men of the town and, of course, there will be deleted scenes and bloopers. The set is going to set you back $59.99.

For the gamers among you, there are a couple of options here. First off, the “Dirty Laundry” board game. In the game, players roll the dice to collect character and secret cards. The winner is the one who can match up three characters with three secrets. At under $3, this looks like a steal to me. If you’re looking for something more hi-tech, there’s a computer game as well. This one is a bit like the Sims… you’ll get to interact with all your favorites, do some snooping and decorate, too. If you buy it off amazon, you can get it for $10.00! Not a bad deal… I may just have to snatch one up myself!

Any domestic divas out there? I’d like to draw you’re attention to this. It’s the Desperate Housewives cookbook. There are no-fail easy dishes (I need these…), quick ones, and more elegant dishes, too. There’s some to fit every character, which I think it kinda cool. This is gonna cost you about $11.00.

Finally… here’s something really cool. I love some of the fashions on the show and I’m sure I’m not alone. Imagine my surprise when I saw there’s actually an exact replica of one of the nighties worn on the show. It’s made for sizes 6-12 and costs $66.00. That is definitely a save up one.

Well, that’s about it. If you want even more merchendise, check out this post where you’ll learn about stuff that is available at the ABC store. Gotta start saving up for some of these goodies… See y’all next time with a recap. Take care!

Season 1 Recap: Who’s That Woman?

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Good morning, everyone! It’s time once again to take a look back at the first season of Desperate Housewives. Today, I’d like to take a look back at episode 4, “Who’s That Woman?”

The episode starts with Lynette going through her daily routine, obviously not happy with what she’s doing. It doesn’t help that she gets a call from the school about the twins. It turns out they painted a little girl blue and now the school believes they need to take medication for ADD. Lynette wants to try separating the twins first. She’s worried that if she starts medicating them, they won’t be the same children anymore. She eventually tries to, but gives in quickly when the twins refuse to take it.

Susan spends most of this episode pretending not to like Mike in front of Mrs. Huber, who is now blackmailing her. She manages to get Susan to pay for her groceries, but when she wants Susan to pay for a broken water heater, too, Susan decides enough is enough and confesses what she did to Julie. Julie agrees to help her steal the measuring cup from Mrs. Huber so there is no more evidence. When Mrs. Huber discovers it’s missing, she confronts Susan who pretends like she has no idea what Huber is talking about.

andrew-ep-4.jpg

Over at the Van de Kamps, Bree has told the kids that Rex had to go to a medical conference. They don’t buy it, though. Andrew blames Bree for his dad leaving and starts giving her attitude. When she calls him on it, Andrew points out he knows what’s going on between her and Rex and that he blames her for it. Bree is shocked and angry about his behavior, especially when he doesn’t come home one night. She decides to search his room and finds a match book for a strip club among his things. Two guesses where she goes next…. it does, by the way, lead to a hilarious scene where Andrew is trying to enjoy the show while Bree goes on about the strippers being victims of molestation and other such things. A man sitting beside them begs Andrew to leave because Bree is spoiling the fun for everyone.

Meanwhile, Gabrielle and John’s romantic bath is interrupted by the cable guy showing up late. John sneaks out while Gabby shows the man in, who apologizes for being so late. While he’s working, he accidently slips and hurts himself, having to be taken away in an ambulance. Carlos becomes suspicious about the fact the cable guy arrived so late (not to mention he found a sock under the bed) and starts asking questions. Gabby assures him the maid uses socks to clean. Carlos, having a working brain cell, doesn’t really believe it and starts questioning John about the cable guy. John is nervous and obviously is lying, so Carlos assumes John is trying to protect Gabrielle and her affair with the cable guy. So, he shows up at the guy’s house and starts beating him up. Carlos soon notices pictures and other things in the house that makes him realize he’s beating up a gay man for sleeping with Gabby. He quickly leaves.

Finally…. all the housewives listen to the tape Bree stole from her doctor’s office and discover Mary Alice’s real name was Angela. They decide it’s time to go to Paul with the note after hearing the tape. When they do, Paul pretends that Mary Alice was crazy and used to write odd notes like this all the time. The girls don’t believe him and are relieved to find out he’s planning to move.

Well, that’s all for now. See ya next time!! I leave you now with some great quotes from the episode…

Susan- Oh, I’m trying a new strategy. I’m playing hard to get.
Julie- How long do you think you can keep that up?
Susan- Oh, maybe until noon. Then I’m gonna have to run over there and beg him to love me.

Mrs. Huber- Oh, good Lord, Susan. You burned your rival’s house down. If that isn’t desperate, I don’t know what is.

Bree- Lynette, you are a great mother, but let’s face it. Your kids are…a challenge.
Lynette- Thank you. That’s the nicest way you could have said that.

Susan- And when I realized I couldn’t put out the fire, I ran. I must have dropped the measuring cup in the process.
Julie- Why do I even let you out of the house?

Bree- I shouldn’t have lied to you about your father. You and sister are old enough to handle the truth and I’m sorry.
Andrew- Keep going. I’m mad at you for about seven thousand other things.
Bree- If you think I’m going to apologize for taking you out of a strip club, you’re wrong. I consider it one of my finest moments.

“Pretty Little Picture”: A Look Back

bree-and-rex-from-episode-3.jpg

Good morning again! Today, I wanna continue a look back at the first season of Desperate Housewives with the 3rd episode, “Pretty Little Picture”. This one kept up the introductions and moved things along well. Take Bree. It starts with her begging Rex to wake up and get back upstairs before the kids wake up so they won’t ask questions. She doesn’t want anyone to know they’re having troubles. She even makes up a story about tennis lessons so no one will guess they’re going to therapy. Rex, however, gets cornered later at a dinner party and spills the truth. Bree is completely embarrassed. Not even everyone else’s embarrassing stories makes her feel better, so she throws out something about Rex so embarrassing, he gets up and walks out of the room. Later on, Bree’s packing his stuff so he can go to a hotel.

Lynette’s miserable and wants a night out. Lucky for her, the Housewives have decided to have Bree host a dinner party Mary Alice was going to give so they can honor her. She asks Tom to go, but he refuses, saying he’d worked too hard on his business trip and just wants to veg at home. She decides to go alone, but make sure the kids eat plenty of cookies to get them all hyper. She wants him to see what she goes through all the time with them. It apparently worked, because check the quotes part below to see what Tom says when they get back. He does seem to understand her point, though, and surprises her when she gets home from shopping the next day with some drinks and a little dancing while the kids are busy watching a movie.

Susan still has not gotten over what Karl did to her and gets into a fight with Karl and his new girlfriend over a soda she dropped on the Mayer’s yard. Karl goes to pick it up after Susan raises a stink, but she just kicks it at him, only to be humiliated when she looks over and sees Mike watching all this. She talks to Lynette about it and is advised to resolve her issues with Karl fast. Susan realizes she’s right and asks Karl to come over so they can talk. Unfortunately, Karl shows up a little early while Susan is still in a towel after having a shower. She tries to get him to come back later, but he refuses. She tells him that she’d like an apology for his affair. He’s confused as to why and refuses to apologize. This gets Susan angry and she rants at him as he’s heading for his car, still in the towel. Of course, this leads to the famous “locked out naked and gets caught by Mike” moment. He helps her break in the house and they go to the dinner party together, with Mike teasing her a bit about the whole thing. Finally, Susan is ready to let go of her anger and actually apologizes to Karl’s girlfriend for the way she behaved and heads back to her house. The girlfriend follows her and apologizes for everything that happened. Susan’s happy now.

Gabrielle, meanwhile is caught kissing John by a new neighbor’s kid, who had accidently kicked a ball into the Solis’ yard. The kid runs off and Gabby wanders around the neighborhood, looking for her. When she finds the kid, she tries to act all innocent about what the kid saw. Ashley (the kid) isn’t buying it, so Gabby offers her a doll. Ashley accepts it and Gabby says if there’s anything she needs, just let her know. Ashley informs Gabby she needs a bike. Gabby complies and next thing she knows, she’s getting roped into teaching Ashley how to ride the bike.

Well, that’s it for the episode. Check back next time for more recaps and over stuff. For now, I leave you with some of my favorite lines.

Rex- So these tennis lessons we’re taking. How are we doing?
Bree- My back hand is improving immensely, but you’re still having problems with your serve.
Rex- Of course.

Karl- I don’t know what to say, Susan. The heart wants what it wants.
Susan- What’s that mean?
Karl- I fell in love.
Susan- While you were married to someone else!
Karl- The heart wants what it wants.
Susan- Yeah, well my heart wants to hurt you, but I can control myself!

Lynette- How was your night?
Tom- We are raising little terrorists. You know that, don’t you?

A Look Back….

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

The second episode of the 1st season was called “Ah, But Underneath”. It opens with Mary Alice talking about how your sight improves after death, even though your other senses leave. She adds that the living could see just as clearly, if they took the time to really look.

In this episode, Gabrielle and John almost get busted when Carlos gets home early. Lucky for them, they are fast enough to get him out of the house before Carlos sees anything he shouldn’t. Gabrielle decides that this is way too risky and that she and John should meet at his place from now on. Everything is fine until John hands her a “perfect” rose that makes her think he’s taking this far more seriously than she is. Meanwhile, Carlos has noticed that she’s unhappy and demands to know what’s wrong. She tells him she wants more excitement, like they used to have. She wants her breath taken away. Carlos decides the best way to do that is to surprise her with an expensive car. Gabrielle loves it, but deep down you can see that the rose meant more to her.

bree-ep-102-cap.thumbnail.jpg

Bree, meanwhile, has demanded she and Rex go to marriage counseling to try and fix things. Rex agrees and tells all about his problems with Bree’s need to be perfect. Bree is shocked by one thing he says so much, she starts focusing in on the Doctor’s loose jacket button and shuts down during their sessions. Rex cancels on one appointment to get Bree the change to speak to the therapist on her own. While they talk, Freud comes up and she rants about how he most likely didn’t appreciate everything his mom did and how he had the nerve to come up with a theory everyone’s problems can be traced back to their mom. During another session, the doctor calls Rex on this and asks if he has ever thanked Bree for all she does. Bree’s happy now.

While all this is going on, Susan is desperately trying to get Mike to ask her out. When she sees it won’t happen, she decides to bite the bullet and do the asking herself. She does so by inviting him to a “traditional” welcome dinner that will consist of take out since she can’t cook. Mike offers to make them a meal at his house and Susan agrees, planning to have Julie be “sick” the night of the dinner. What she isn’t planning on is Edie later seeing them walking into Mike’s house with shopping bags and managing to get herself an invite as well. Susan agrees to let her come, but is obviously mad about it. Julie’s not gonna be sick after all. This turns out to be a good thing because when Edie starts making pointed comments to get Mike to like her more, Julie realizes what’s going on and starts playing the same game. Susan’s happy and actually tries a trick of her own to make Mike’s dog start licking her. Like many of Susan’s schemes, though, it backfires when Bongo ends up eating her earring and has to be rushed to the vet. Lucky for her, Bongo is alright. When Mike starts talking about his ex and how she made him promise to take care of the dog, Susan realizes he might not be ready to date her or Edie.

lynette-ep-102-cap.thumbnail.jpg

Finally, we have Lynette. There’s really not much going on here. She gets pulled over by a cop because the boys are bouncing around in the back without seatbelts and starts ranting about how hard she has it when the cop tells her that ‟it’s your job‟ to control the boys. When the boys keep up the behavior later, she takes a tip from Mrs. Huber and makes the boys think she is driving away without them. The only problem is, someone saw it and took the boys in her house to feed them. The woman threatens to call CPS before the boys and Lynette make an escape. They’ve learned their lesson, though, and have immediately fasten their seatbelts after getting in the car.

I really liked this episode. Like many of the early season 1 episodes, it’s done a great job of introducing us to everyone and helping us to get into their heads. Gabrielle, in particular, was really good in this one. I don’t agree with what she’s doing, but I can understand why she feels the way she does. Carlos was a bit cold and oblivious like that back then. Well, that’s it for now. I will leave you with some of the best quotes from the episode. Take care and see ya next time!

Julie- Dear Diary. Mike doesn’t even know I’m alive.
Susan- Shut up.
Julie- If you want to date him, you’re gonna have to ask him out.
Susan- I keep hoping he’ll ask me out.
Julie- How’s that going?

Carlos- I know you’re awake.
Gabby- I know you’re a jerk.

Edie- It’s all gone. Everything my ex-husband worked for all those years. Gone.

Rex (to the therapist after she gives the doctor some homemade potpourri) The answer is yes. You’re about to make a fortune off us.

Bloopers and More!

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Good morning, Housewives fans. I hope everyone’s doing well today. Since it’s still early, why don’t we start the day off with a laugh? I found these great bloopers from the season 3 DVD on youtube.

I just love those, don’t you? There’s plenty more where those came from. Check out all the seasons on DVD to get even more bloopers and other cool features. I was watching a Marc Cherry interview on one of them and was surprised to learn there is quite a bit of ad-libbing going on.

So, do you all remember the other day when I mentioned the fire that broke out at Universal? Well, there’s an update being reported at different outlets. Apparently, the fire was started accidently by workers who were using a blow torch to make some changes to one of the sets. When all seemed to be well an hour later, they took a break only to come back to a mess. Bad water pressure has also been faulted for the fact the fire went on so long.

Finally, he may not be stalking Katherine anymore, but that doesn’t mean he’s staying out of trouble. Gary Cole, who played her evil ex, has been cast in a new ABC pilot. According to the news, he’s playing a prisoner who is the head of a family of trouble makers. His stint in the big house supposedly will inspire his wife to make the rest of the family change their wicked ways. The first role I every saw Gary Cole in was as Mike Brady in the Brady Bunch movies, so these latest parts have come as a bit of a shock. I must say, though, he’s great as a villain.

I guess that’s about it for now. Til next time, take care and have a good one!

Desperate Husbands

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

ricardo.thumbnail.jpgThe Housewives aren’t the only desperate ones on Wysteria Lane. I thought it was time we highlighted some of the men on the block, starting with Carlos Solis himself, Ricardo Antonio Chavira.

I’d say Carlos is my favorite of the husbands on the show and Ricardo plays him perfectly. Take the scene where Carlos gets busted for beating up Justin because he thinks that Gabby was sleeping with him. When he finds out that Justin is actually gay, you can seriously see the headache he’s getting as he realizes the mess he’s just gotten himself into while he says “not again”. I also enjoyed the resignation and defeat in his voice as he tells the cop he wants his lawyer.

Carlos isn’t exactly the nicest of characters (just consider the scene above, plus the other times he turned to violence), but Ricardo manages to make him likeable no matter what trouble he’s getting himself into. And, being with Gabby, that’s plenty.

In real life, Ricardo is much more charitable than his TV counterpart. He’s been actively involved in supporting the fight against breast cancer. He was named captain of the “Race for the Cure” in 2005 and was also part of the Lee National Denim Day. For that one, he teamed up with fellow desperate husband James Denton to raise over 10 million for the cause. He was also honored for his work in the fight against AIDS by the Latino Commission. Not bad for someone who makes his career as a troublemaker.

Well, that’s about it for now. Take care and I’ll see you next time with more news, reviews and other cool stuff.

The New Neighbor?

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Good morning, everyone. Hope you’re all enjoying the holiday weekend. Since we’re back to seeing reruns again, I thought I’d take some time to talk about the Season 1 DVD set for those who don’t have it. I got the chance to borrow it recently and I’m enjoying it a lot. It has, of course, all the episodes plus some great features. There are interviews, commentary, behind-the-scenes stuff and more.

dvd-cap.jpgOne of my favorite features is “Oprah Winfrey is the New Neighbor”. It’s a skit in which Winfrey plays Karen Stofer, a woman longing for a simpler life away from the big city and the pressures of a running huge company. Guess she didn’t check out the area carefully enough… Anyway, the skit briefly features the Housewives themselves introducing themselves to her. Once they leave, Karen decides to go to the store and get some sugar so she can make a special dessert in honor of their first night in a new home. Her husband talks her into borrowing some from the neighbors because “people in the suburbs live for that stuff.”

Oprah then goes on a mission to get sugar, getting spliced into scenes from the first season. She interacts with Susan after she was locked out of the house naked, watches Lynette yelling at the kids and other stuff. She runs home to tell her husband there is something very wrong with this neighborhood. Later, she goes on a walk and comes across a sight that causes her to demand they leave immediately.

I thought it was pretty amusing to see a relatively normal person getting thrown into the world of Wysteria Lane and realizing these people are seriously messed up… but isn’t that the fun of the show? Well, I’m out of here. There’s plenty more of the way this week, so stay tuned!
